Data preservation is undoubtedly one of the most critical topics for both companies and individuals. With an increasing dependence on digital systems and the rapid evolution of cyber threats driven by artificial intelligence, the need for robust data preservation and protection strategies becomes imperative.


In this article, I will explore the importance of backups, considering human nature and the propensity for error, while also highlighting solutions such as data immutability and "air gap" in protection against ransomware and viruses.


Furthermore, I will address the essential role of Cloud technology and the resurgence of Tape usage, spotlighting renowned manufacturers such as Dell, Veeam, and Nakivo.


Understanding the Human Context


Our tolerance for errors is limited. Data loss, whether due to human error or cyber attack, can cause devastating consequences including financial losses, reputational damage, and operational disruptions.


Studies show that 93% of companies that lose their data for more than 10 days end up declaring bankruptcy within a year. Implementing effective backups is therefore more than a security measure; it is an operational necessity.


However, beyond technological solutions, it is essential to rely on qualified technical teams with continuous and updated training. Multidisciplinary service providers, with updated focus and knowledge, are an asset in this process, allowing differentiated adaptation to each technological environment.

 

The Evolution of Cyber Threats


We are all aware that cyber threats have been evolving rapidly. In the 1980s, computer viruses were relatively simple and generally spread via floppy disks. In the 1990s, the internet brought a new era of threats such as worms and trojans, which spread more quickly and widely.

In the 2000s, the growth of social networks and e-commerce increased the attack surface, with phishing and ransomware attacks becoming common.


The COVID-19 pandemic brought a significant increase in remote work and reliance on digital technologies, further expanding the potential for cyber attacks. More recently, threat sophistication has exponentially increased with the use of artificial intelligence.

Today, AI tools enable hackers to create extremely complex malware capable of bypassing traditional defense systems in differentiated and increasingly complex ways.


One of the most effective strategies to protect against these threats is the implementation of immutable backups. Immutable data backups are versions that cannot be altered or deleted, even if the system is compromised. This approach ensures that, in the event of an attack, there will always be an intact copy of the data. Leading data protection solutions advocate immutability as a recommended practice to protect against ransomware, ensuring that data remains unaltered against any malicious action.

The Importance of Air Gap

·      The "air gap" involves keeping a copy of data completely isolated from the main network, without any physical or logical connection, thereby preventing exploitation by malicious agents. Manufacturers like Dell and Nakivo highlight air gap as one of the best practices to ensure that data is protected against unauthorized access, isolated and secure against ransomware attacks.

 

Cloud Technology and Tape

·       Cloud backup technology offers flexibility and scalability, allowing companies to store large volumes of data with fast and efficient access at an increasingly affordable cost. Dell Technologies asserts that integrating Cloud backups with on-premises solutions provides an additional layer of security and redundancy.

·      On the other hand, magnetic tapes (Tape) remain a viable option for long-term backups. Tapes are resilient, have large capacity, and are durable (when stored correctly), lasting decades. They inherently enable the implementation of an air gap practice, as they are not connected to the network, standing out as a robust option against cyber attacks.

 


Implementing effective backups, data immutability strategies, and air gap solutions are essential to ensure data integrity and availability.

However, technology alone is not enough. It is vital for companies to adopt a proactive approach, investing in preventive measures that go beyond simple technology implementation. Continuous training of technical teams, ongoing vulnerability analysis, and regular system updates are fundamental steps to mitigate risks.


The right approach can indeed make a difference in the resilience and operability of companies. Partnering with experienced and specialized cybersecurity firms can help create a personalized and effective defense strategy tailored to the specific needs of each organization.
