On October 14, 2025, Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019 will reach the end of support. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide:
Technical support for troubleshooting issues;
Bug fixes that could impact server stability and usability;
Security updates to mitigate critical vulnerabilities;
Time zone updates and other operational improvements.
Although these versions of Exchange will continue to function beyond this date, the absence of support and security updates represents a significant risk to the integrity and continuity of operations. Organizations must take a proactive approach to ensure the security and compliance of their IT infrastructure.
Options for Exchange Server Continuity
Microsoft recommends two main approaches for this transition:
Migration to Exchange Online or Microsoft 365
Migrating to the cloud is the safest and most efficient option for replacing on-premises Exchange Server. Exchange Online enables organizations to benefit from:
Always up-to-date infrastructure, eliminating the need for manual upgrades;
Enhanced security with advanced protection against cyber threats;
Greater scalability and accessibility, ensuring operational continuity without reliance on physical infrastructure;
Integration with advanced artificial intelligence-based technologies, unavailable in on-premises environments.
Microsoft provides the FastTrack program to support organizations in this migration process, offering expert guidance and technical support throughout all phases of the transition.
Preparing for the transition to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE)
For organizations that need to maintain on-premises Exchange Server, Microsoft will launch the new Exchange Server SE version in 2025. To ensure an efficient transition, it is recommended that:
Organizations using Exchange Server 2019 keep their servers updated to enable an in-place upgrade to Exchange Server SE when available.
Organizations using Exchange Server 2016 upgrade to Exchange Server 2019 as soon as possible, as a direct upgrade to Exchange Server SE will not be possible.
Organizations still running versions earlier than Exchange Server 2016 must discontinue these before installing Exchange Server 2019 CU15 or migrating to Exchange Server SE.
Exchange Server TAP Program
Companies that wish to continue using on-premises Exchange Server and test pre-release versions of Exchange Server SE can apply for the Exchange Server Technology Adoption Program (TAP). Participation in this program provides:
The ability to provide feedback to Microsoft and influence future updates;
A direct relationship with the Exchange engineering team;
Early access to information and features of the new version.
Acceptance into the TAP program is subject to an evaluation and approval process by Microsoft.
Other Microsoft products reaching end of Support in 2025
In addition to Exchange Server 2016 and 2019, several other Microsoft products will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025, including:
Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 2019;
Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2019;
Skype for Business 2016 and 2019;
Windows 10, among others.
Organizations should consult Microsoft’s official support database for details on product lifecycles and plan necessary updates or migrations accordingly.
